Pity Parties

Posted by Marcia Carole on Thursday, January 31, 2013,

My sample of an idea with students, Marcia Carole

Last night, (dark, rainy) after leaving a meeting, I headed to the grocery store to buy more broccoli, blueberries, kale, celery, and other green and red/purple food. With each expensive, organic item I threw in my small cart, I got more and more frustrated, until a full on pity party was upon me. A pity party is like hanging out with a bad guest list of people who enjoy wounding others, only my guests were only in my head! You know the types. ...

Final Stages of Latest Book

Posted by Marcia Carole on Tuesday, January 29, 2013,

I've been busy cutting out the accordion book that the book "pages" will be glued to. That process will begin tomorrow or the next day. Today, I am painting with gesso on the book for a strengthening base, then I will paint both sides a deep blue color with acrylic. I am thinking of putting some fabric on the back because it helps to preserve the book in the hot climates where I travel.

I've had my Happy Light on all morning, which seems to cheer me a bit, as the rain continues to fall.  Stay ...

Pure Grace

Abraham, Sarah and Hagar, Collage, Marcia Carole

My neighbors, Vickie and Dave, have been God's grace and unconditional love in my life in so many ways. Tonight, in the rainy dark, I grabbed my boots, to put the trash to the curb. I had waited until dark, and could have kicked myself for being so tardy. As I braced myself for the wet, cold air and the task of dragging the containers down the driveway, I spotted said containers right in front of my house! I teared up, not only because the conta...

Waiting, Waiting, Waiting

Waiting On The Lord, Painted Papers and Fabric, Marcia Carole

After Abraham was given the promise of a child, he and his wife, Sarah, waited and waited and waited. Still, no child for Sarah. When Sarah was in her 30s, 40s and early 50s, just maybe, she and Abraham had hope; God could use her body to produce the promised child. Eventually, their hope gave out. Sarah decided to help God out with her own plan. (Never a good plan.)

When is God most glorified? When there is no possible way men and ...

Hagar Begins

The Promise To Abraham, Painted Papers and Fabric, Marcia Carole

Hagar. She is a purchased woman, someone's property, enslaved and eventually told to sleep with another woman's husband to give the family a boy child. Suddenly, she is a bride, of sorts. Then she becomes proud in her new position, leading her mistress to despise her, abuse and beat her. (Get in your place.) Hagar runs from her mistress and her life. In that page of her story, she meets the one true God.

I began this collaged book...

Teaching Art Lessons

Tree Study with Pens, Pen and Ink, Marcia Carole

A very good friend has asked for art lessons each week. She is naturally gifted in creating art, and she is excited to get back into it on a weekly basis. So, we began a couple of weeks ago. It's been a privilege to teach her, as she takes in my nuanced advice as to what makes better art. I am still learning as well!

We began by discussing line; we used a variety of drawing media to see what sorts of lines we could produce. We drew trees using va...

Painting Papers For Hannah and Hagar's Stories

Posted by Marcia Carole on Friday, January 11, 2013,

I've been painting papers for making collage books on the stories of both Hagar and Hannah, two important women in the Bible account. Women have a great role to play in sharing God's Story of love and redemption beginning in the Old Testament, and culminating in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus: God come as man to rescue us. God loves women.

I am putting the book on Hagar together first. She was a slave girl who was trying to escape her abuser by fleeing into the wilderness. There, sh...

Fruitful Life

Fruitful Life, Original Watercolor, Marcia Carole

Two handfuls of years ago, I painted this painting in response to a sermon. It was a really novel idea to paint in response to scripture/preaching then, and I remember telling the pastor's wife what I had done. She was totally taken aback. What an unheard of idea back then. She had no place to put it in her thinking, and, frankly, I didn't have much of a reason, intellectually, as to why I did it. I just HAD to do it. (I must have been moved by...

Telling Our Stories

Posted by Marcia Carole on Wednesday, January 9, 2013,
Today, I led an art/story/faith workshop with young mothers. I was blessed to have two lovely friends come and help me set up, help the women, and break down. I would love to take our little team to other workshops locally and globally. These young moms will be sharing their stories with each other, in the days ahead, and I am certain, they will pray for one another. They greatly blessed me by praying for healing from cancer for me as our time came to a close.

After sharing parts of my story,...

Preparation Day

Posted by Marcia Carole on Monday, January 7, 2013,

Tomorrow, I'll be leading a workshop of art/story/faith. The women will be using collage, and a little book I have made for each of them, to share their stories. There is lots of preparation and packing in order to facilitate this event. I am blessed to have two friends, for this workshop, who have helped cut out photos and words. They will also help me set up and break down for the event, which is a huge blessing to me.

I am looking forward to all the Lord will do at the event, and I pray he...

The Fire and New Beginnings

Posted by Marcia Carole on Sunday, January 6, 2013,

Collaged Story, painted papers, magazine pictures, Marcia Carole

"Have you journaled about your fire?" a friend asks me. "No." I think to myself, "I want to forget about the fire." Who wants to remember that a certain person(me) forgot to blow out a candle, which ended up exploding, lighting a wreath and 3 placemats on fire, lighting a table and chair on fire, causing smoke damage throughout my entire house. It wasn't the Chicago fire, the cow didn't kick anything over burning down an entire c...

Free. Really?

Posted by Marcia Carole on Wednesday, January 2, 2013,

Free, Acrylic on canvas, Marcia Carole

I have forced myself to paint more freely today. It does not come naturally, but I want to keep pushing myself to try greater abstraction in my work, occasionally. This is my second painting on the concept of being free, taken from Romans 5 and 6 in the Bible.

As Bob Dylan says, everyone is going to serve someone or something. We were made to worship. It is how we are wired. We are slaves to sin, or doing things our way apart from God. (Having it our way.)...

About Me

Marcia Carole It is my pleasure to help many to process their stories by using a variety of art forms. The art reaches non-verbal parts of the brain, where trauma is stored. Healing may take place through the art-making. By sharing our stories, we become known. Instead of running from our stories, we embrace them and see how God can redeem them and use them.
